FBC Kaufman Youth Center
Kaufman, TX
SCNZ was contacted by the First Baptist Church of Kaufman (FBC Kaufman) to design the first building of a new campus for the congregation. This two-story facility would set the material and detail standards for the subsequent buildings on the campus.
SCNZ was tasked with developing a design that was familiar to this semi-rural area outside of Dallas, but that was also affordable. We modeled the design after the vernacular architecture of the Austin Hill Country, utilizing stone from the Austin and Oklahoma areas, and combining those materials with more affordable brick and Hardieplank.
This youth center, informally called “The Porch” features a theater/multi-use/worship room, breakout meeting rooms, café, game room, offices and a lounge for the congregation’s youth. We tailored the interior of the building to children by utilizing a playful palette of materials and forms, combining the warmth of laminated wood beams and stained wall panels with corrugated metal and exposed concrete floors to create a casual and inviting space for the youth of the congregation.
